Buffalo Dancer, Lester Quanimptewa (Hopi)

Lester Quanimptewa’s Rio Grande Buffalo Dancer sculpture is meticulously hand crafted from cottonwood and acrylic paint. The attention to detail in this three-dimensional, realist carving is spectacular. From a single, solid piece of wood, a life-like form emerges: sashes twist and undulate, texture on skin and fingernails are articulated, shell and kilt forms are hollowed out with amazing details. To complete this tour de force of craftsmanship, acrylic color is applied to the high and low spots on the dancer’s costume and body adding shading and dimension.
