The interviews were not formatted to reveal religious or sacred practices in the Tewa Communities. The participants were asked questions concerning issues important to their culture; such as traditions practiced within a seasonal context, and contemporary concerns such as gaming.
Tessie Naranjo, PhD., from Santa Clara Pueblo was contracted through the Pueblo of Pojoaque to coordinate and direct the project. Tessie has grown up traditionally and speaks her native language, Tewa.
The NPS project will have several lasting benefits for all Tewa communities. Documenting cultural traditions is one way tribes can preserve and transmit their culture to future generations. The recordings will be kept in the Pojoaque Tribal Library and Archives for study by Tewa community members, with a focused educational plan for Tewa children.
